Speller Advisory Council
Spellers helping shape the direction of the Alliance.
The Speller Advisory Council exists so that nonspeaking and unreliably speaking people have meaningful influence over the priorities, advocacy and direction of the Spelling Alliance of Ireland. Council members are not consulted about the Alliance — they help shape it.
Why the Council exists
Nonspeaking people are frequently discussed, assessed and represented within systems without meaningful involvement in the decisions that affect them.
The Alliance is built around a different principle: the people most affected by decisions should have a meaningful role in shaping them.
The Council provides a structure through which spellers can identify priorities, raise issues and influence the work of the Alliance.
What the Council helps shape
The Speller Advisory Council may contribute to areas including:
- Organisational priorities
- Advocacy and awareness work
- Policy submissions and consultations
- Campaigns
- Issues affecting nonspeaking and unreliably speaking people
- Community initiatives
- The future development of the Alliance
The Council will continue to evolve as the Alliance grows.

Leadership, not consultation

Spellers should not simply be asked for feedback after decisions have already been made. Their experiences, ideas and priorities should help shape the work from the very beginning.
How the Council connects to the Alliance
The Speller Advisory Council forms an important part of the Alliance’s developing governance and decision-making structure, helping ensure that speller perspectives remain central as the organisation grows.
